The Tabby cat was named after a piece of silk made in Baghdad, giving them the name “Tabby.”  Although this name is very simple, there are still some possibilities of where it might have come from. The silk that they are compared to comes from the Attabiy district in Baghdad. The French term for it was “atabis” coming from the 14th century, which soon turned into “Tabis”. This translates into what it is actually called today “tabby”
